Elektra Pnyx HD Valve Preamplifier – Australian Made

The Elektra Pnyx HD is a locally designed and built valve preamplifier that genuinely performs well beyond its price point. In my system, it has comfortably competed with preamps in the $10,000 AUD bracket, particularly in terms of transparency, low noise, and musical coherence.

Sonically, the Pnyx HD strikes an excellent balance between neutrality and musicality. It is highly resolving yet never clinical, with excellent image stability, natural tonal colour, and a sense of ease that encourages long listening sessions. Dynamics are handled effortlessly, and the soundstage is both wide and well layered, with precise placement of instruments and vocals. It is very much a “wire with gain” style preamp that lets upstream components and recordings speak for themselves.

From a technical standpoint, the dual-mono, fully balanced design contributes to its low noise floor, strong channel separation, and overall sense of control. Build quality is outstanding and reflects the high standard of Australian audio engineering.

The preamp is supplied with a matched quad of Electro-Harmonix 6922 valves, which sound clean, reliable, and well balanced. I also have two matched pairs of NOS Amperex ECC88 Bugle Boy halo-getter tubes available. These bring a clear step up in refinement, with more natural timbre, greater harmonic richness, and improved realism—particularly noticeable on vocals, strings, and acoustic instruments. These tubes are not included in the asking price but can be added for a reasonable additional amount.

Reason for sale: I am currently exploring a different preamp topology and need to free up funds, otherwise this would happily remain in my system.
