It is with great sorrow that I have decided to part with my number one system. The McIntosh amps went last week.
Here's some extracts from The Absolute Sound review regarding the very similar Alon V Mk.2 :
THE FLOOR-STANDING ALÓN V LOUDSPEAKER from Acarian Systems may be modest in appearance, but don't let that fool you-- this unassuming three-way design is an exceptional speaker. In fact, in my listening room, the Alón V speaks with such scale and authority that I would never need or want anything more. That might sound like hyperbole- believe it.
The Alón V speakers are so good that whenever I encountered a sonic limitation in my reviewing, it more often than not turned out to be the associated equipment and not the speaker, since the sound just kept getting better and better with each improvement in associated equipment. I'd go so far as to say that the Alón V's at $4,950 (ed. that's $US 25+ years ago) are better than most of the associated equipment they are going to be paired with.
And - If you are looking for a speaker that gives you the sense that little if anything in the quality of reproduction is being compromised; a speaker that is accurate and musically faithful (enough of this jive about musicality versus accuracy-the two are not only not musically exclusive, but go hand in hand); one that allows the finest associated equipment to be heard to full potential, and is an unbridled, unbounded pleasure to listen to, then make it your business to audition the Alón V Why don't I end this review with a cliché, albeit one I can live with (stop beating the point to death, already!): For me, it was love at first listen.
I discovered the Alon V years ago when working in high end hifi. The store where I worked for about 14 years had speakers ranging up to $200k a pair, and my (almost real world) favourites for quite a while were the B&W Nautilus 802. They were at a more modest figure than the top Focal models, but still beyond my capability to purchase.
But as soon as I heard the traded-in Alons I was sold! There was nothing in the shop for under $20k that I would have swapped them for, and they even eased my chagrin at not being able to get the N802 since, to be honest, the sound appeals to me even more than the 802 did!
Acarian Systems was run by Carl Marchisotto and his wife Marilyn. Carl was previously part of the highly respected (and successfully unconventional) Dahlquist company.
The Alon series of models went on improving over some years while remaining similar in appearance, and the V has brilliant performance and wide frequency range. The bass section goes down to 29dB, outperforming some of the earlier versions despite having 10” woofers rather than 12” (as in some earlier models), in sealed enclosures. The top end is handled by a 5" mid and a 1” dome tweeter, both of which are vented to the rear, giving them a dipole effect. This does wonders for sound staging, while overall the impression is very dynamic and very smooth, focused sound.
There's also a very impressive review of the IV by Robert Deutsch at Stereophile will give you the correct steer as to the performance. The specifications and appearance are similar to the V. See it at : https://www.stereophile.com/floorloudspeakers/293acarian/index.html
These Alon V are tri-wirable and have good grilles.
I am available during the day for auditions and/or to deliver and set up if you’re not too far away. They are now hooked up to a Yamaha 150w x 2 power amp, not as good as my former setup but at least we can now offer auditions. Just one thing: I am often away - check with me.
