Description
AR92 from 1979. Wonderful speakers that can hold their own against modern models.
These utilised a 10” woofer designed for this speaker, yielding surprising amounts of bass.
- Crossovers recapped with Dayton film types
- Some faulty resistors replaced
- I replaced the foam surrounding the tweeters with an aftermarket that is slightly thicker than the original; the midrange foam and felt are original
- Original grill frames are solid but I replaced the black cloth with original AR maroon cloth from a pair of other AR speakers
New Dayton satin nickel binding posts
- Poly gloss finish. First I took off the original ‘walnut’ paint which exposed the gorgeous underlying veneer. I filled the grain, then treated it with a Norglass marine product to deepen the colour and extend its life. After that I applied 7 coats of marine polyurethane over 3 months. Then I hand sanded it back all the way to 6000 grit and followed by hand polishing with 3 compounds to a gloss finish.
I doubt you’ll find a pair of these speakers anywhere in the world with such a finish.
