Further Information

Hi there, I recently moved to central Victoria and retired from the workforce.  I have had a long and fulfilling journey with my hi-fi and with my change in circumstances (downsizing), I am moving some favourites on.

Altec 408A Bi-Flex 8” Speakers

Driver details:

These are very rare speakers from the mid-50s

Specs from original flyer - 15-watts, 8-ohms, frequency range from 60 to 16KHz

8-inch drivers that were re-coned approximately 20-years ago with original new-old-stock cones and were placed in storage until I purchased them last year. The surrounds and inner ring are both coated with the correct Altec coating which keeps them flexible and never dries.

Joe Roberts of Sound Practices magazine considers these as second to the legendary Altec 755A:

“Mid 50s 408A Biflex is probably second best. Good bass but soft and rolled off, not crisp, super fast, and extended like a 755A”

Cabinet details:

Housed in quality 18mm birch ply cabinets made by Aranmar Acoustics

Black front grilles

Internal silver wiring, banana sockets and Neutrik sockets at the rear

As per the JE Labs web site article, the cabinets were designed by genius Silbatone engineer Dr. Stefano Bae as a group project for the Silbatone-sponsored DIY/Western Electric forum in South Korea

Included in this purchase:

Two heavy-duty speaker stands, sand filled

A pair of Pioneer PIM 8-L 8-inch drivers, with new outer cone surrounds, coloured black (restored by a retired Goodman’s Audion Engineer in 2021)

I can deliver to Melbourne, depending on location.
