Bryston, 4B SST Pro, Power Amplifiers (Set of 5)

5 x Bryston 4B SST Pro Power Amplifiers. 

I purchased these as a set from a sound post-production studio liquidation auction in late 2010.

As there were no boxes, paperwork, receipts or invoices included in the sale, I had our studio technician bench and test them, everything was perfect and ‘like-new’ 

Ever since then, they have faithfully served as my reference monitor power amplifiers on literally thousands of hours of television, DVD, Blu-ray and OTT/streaming originals, 5.1 surround mixes, remasters from theatrical source stems, deliverable creation, pre/post QA reporting and critical/forensic listening and analysis.

They were mounted on rack trays with 2RU vent spacers between each amplifier in a temperature controlled rack on dedicated re-genned and protected power.

They were set to ‘Bridged Mode’ which configured each amplifier into a single 900w mono channel and discreetly powered my surround setup of Tannoy System 10 and System 8 speakers.

The system was hardware limited to 79 dBFS, with a weekly calibration check using ‘Smaart V8’. The finite calibration was achieved via the rear variable attenuators (potentiometers) which is only available on Bryston’s ‘Pro’ models. (Please see photo of rear pots, located under 2v switch) 

In addition to this, they were annually un-racked and bench tested by our tech to and order cycled so that each unit was equally loaded over the years. All of this was done as my reputation and pay cheque depended on it, these were my tools of trade. They are the most reliable piece of professional kit I’ve ever owned and it was a luxury to use them everyday. 

Their linear power application is stunning and reveals minute detail and accurate stage-width reproduction at the lowest of listening volumes.

Even when operating in ‘Individual’ mode, They can command any type of speaker to perform at their absolute best. 

Typically the ‘source’ for my work was Pro Tools or Pyramix. Pending the client. 

In 2018, I wired a Yamaha Aventage RX-A3070’s pre-outputs into the Brystons to QA/QC check Dolby Digital, DolbyE and DTS encodes and decodes for a U.S studio master delivery package. 

They are fan-less, completely silent and the front rack handles can be removed if you have a traditional hi-fi or home theatre setup and want them mounted in a well-built and ventilated cabinet. Each unit weighs in at 26 kg / 57.32 lbs unboxed. 

If I was just leaving the industry, I would most definitely be keeping at least one of these for stereo music as my ‘end-game’ power amplifier. 

Condition: 

Cosmetic - Good / Excellent

All photos were taken in direct midday sunlight to try and give you the best representation of their cosmetic condition. 

The scuffs to the front handles and the single cracked plastic binding post cover were present when I purchased them originally and it does not affect operation. The faceplates are all clean and unblemished with only minor rack rash to the mounting holes. 

Electronic - Excellent

Although we have already started downsizing and moving house, I can facilitate a visit to inspect and test them yourself if you are able to bring along your own multi-meter, small pre-amp and test speaker.
