Further Information

This was originally listed 3 months ago and gained quite a bit of interest. At the time I thought I had a sale however as these things happen, this fell through. This is a relist with an adjusted price and obviously priced to sell. This is a regrettable sale. To say I have fallen in love with the Magnepan range would be an understatement. There is a saying that once you go flat you never go back and in my case this is very close to the truth.

Little bit of a background. I had searched for some time to get these speakers and finally came upon a pair some 6 years ago. I endured the drive to Newcastle - NSW - and came back with the speakers not really knowing what to expect.

Once I took the felt covering off the speakers I discovered what I had anticipated - that excessive moisture over the years along with poor glue technology necessitated a rewire.

Living just outside Gosford I then commenced the refurbishment journey with Warren from Gosford Hifi undertaking the rebuild. Quick note here - Warren is the official Australian repairer for Magnepan speakers with Bill McLean at the helm as the principal distributor.

First part of the rebuild was to completely remove the mdf frames which were replaced with Tasmanian Oak. This part of the works was completed by a fellow SNAer Peter Keenan who has a long history in cabinet making/carpentry/joinery.

I then borrowed some ideas from @andyr - to be honest we have had some robust conversations over the years but Andy is an absolute gentleman who is rightfully considered a doyan of the Maggie fraternity with a storied career as a Maggie owner. From Andy I had some powder coated metal stands made for each of the three panels per side.

In terms of the rebuild we deviated from the original wire and set about utilising the quasi ribbon on the two bass panels which at the time was one of only two systems that I am aware of anywhere in the world had modified the IDs with the QR.

Furthermore, the original IDs were a two way configuration but I changed this to three with the addition of a pair of Version 2 ribbon tweeters which are typically found on the 3.7s and 20.7s for the top end.

This system can be run two way as I retained the original crossover OR three way if your intention is to run the system with a DSP.

This is a beautifully breathtaking sound which in my viewer tops the 20.7s which would cost you significantly more than these speakers. Bear in mind that the latest iteration 30.7s represent a return to the TYMPANI range with a multi panel configuration.

These speakers obviously require space and robust amplification as Maggie speakers just get better and better as the amplification you throw at it increases in quality.

Like many over the last two years we made the decision to sell and move elsewhere during COVID. I had hope that our new place would be home to the IDs but sadly the death of my father resulted in my mother moving in - great outcome in many respects - and now there is no room for the speakers so they have been sitting idle in the garage for the last 18 months.

I have included photos of the old setup as well as photos of the speakers in situ.

If more photos are required then I will endeavour to accommodate the interest.

The price point for these speakers falls well short of the overall investment that has gone into getting these speakers to their current condition.

Clearly if pick up is not available then arrangements will need to be made to construct boxes to house the speakers for transport.

Thankyou if you have come this far.

Ozzie
