History:
Bought faulty from a member here.
When arrived, it did not read CDs and its display has been pushed in. A common occurrence when people carry it (25kg) by front and rear (instead of sides) and their palm pushes the display in.
Luckily no damage to display was done and it was affixed back in its place.
As far as disc reading, sadly, the KSS-151A laser had to be replaced, because the original one was dead (had no light emission).
This happens when a player needs a service, and a novice "repairer" just increases laser power. This makes them read CDs... for about a week or two, after which they die.
Laser sourced from a donor player and was only 6% used (or 94% good). For info how it is measured, see two or three videos in which I talk about it on my channel
The bad:
- - It is in a very good condition but not in a pristine one. There might be some blemishes here and there but nothing that is normally visible. I just put in this disclaimer here because nothing from mid 90s is truly pristine.
- - It is big and heavy (over 24kg) and hence I would strongly prefer a local sale (where I can deliver and even set it up) rather than pack it for postage. But will do it, if no local interest is shown. I buy new packing material and pack very well. Also this is an exceptionally well made player and should travel well.
The good:
- Fully balanced with 4 x Burr-Brown PCM-1702 laser trimmed resistor ladder DAC chips. Penultimate DAC to do this, before the onset of the current cheap Sigma-Delta ones. In my book, the best DAC ever made.
- Two extra channels for single ended outputs derived by taking parts of balanced ones with error cancelling.
- 4 digital outputs with an excellent SPDIF digital output trace. On par with Accupahse Dp-80L Transport, and any Esoteric but better than any C.E.C. transport regardless of price.
- 4 digital inputs (yes, you can feed your other sources to this extraordinary DAC). The choice, as with outputs are: SPDIF coaxial (on BNC), balanced AES/EBU (on XLR), plastic optical Toslink and AT&T glass optical.
- Fully remotely controlled pre-amplifier designed to work straight into the power amp of your choice. Level control to match both domestic and professional studio gear.
- CD Transport is achieved by Esoteric VRDS as found in P-700 CD transport and servo from one of the other Esoteric units (looks similar to maybe VRDS T-10/25)
- Laser unit is friction-less, magnetically driven Sony KSS-151A which is only about 6 or 7 % used, with more than 90% of its life still ahead of it.
- All of servo control is enclosed in Faraday cage underneath the DAC board with cables shrouded in extra screen foil tied to ground points.
- All power supplies are separate for all parts of circuit. DAC board alone has 11 voltage regulators with some more on servo board and input/output board. 14 or 15 in total.
- For clock fanatics, there is a extra stable clock factory fitted on the servo board and DAC board alone features 4 separate crystal oscillators.
- Plays virtually any CD or CD-R and excels in error correction with ability to read Test CDs with 3mm data interruption and also 3mm black line painted on the surface (Red Book Standard calls for 0.9mm ability).
I have only seen 2 or maybe 3 players being able to do it in my years of CD player servicing.
The Sound:
This of course is subjective and based on listening at night of acoustic jazz at low levels.
Renowned Wadia bass with both detail and depth, totally separated and below the rest of music. Excellent stereo and pin point imaging. Fine top end.
On the negative side I have found that whereas it does have plenty of slam, maybe it is not the fastest on speed of note attack. Bit like a valve player but a faster than most, if not all.
Accessories it comes with are:
- Original remote controller (very heavy, milled from a single piece of metal)
- 4 original spike feet
The last photo shows a RF eye pattern confirming nice and sharp diamond shaped trace.

The Sale:
I strongly prefer local sale so that I do not have to pack it, send it or risk any damage to it (but will do if no local interest is shown).
Local buyer will - as always - enjoy a return to base 12 months Warranty.
Sorry if this is too much information.
